Chapter Thirteen

Angie tilted her head, admiring the sparkle of the distant stars in the night sky through the branches. Their bright beauty amazed her. The only stars she’d ever seen in LA wore designer gowns. These were far more breathtaking. The dying glow of the fire crackled a few feet in front of her where she lingered at the lip of her tent. She’d tucked one of panels to the side to sit and think. She certainly wasn’t sleeping.

Loren was out cold in his own tent, perfectly at ease in the wild. He’d had no trouble whatsoever rolling over and calling it a day. Mark lay behind her, sound asleep, making her envious with his state of blissfulness.

She hadn’t been so lucky. Fatigue mocked her, and sleep was eluding her. She’d had no luck playing find the needle in the haystack. Since there would be no sleep, she let her mind wander over the reason she was awake. The talisman was out there; she knew it. She needed more time to work through the markings she had, and the few new ones she’d found deeper in the caves. Unfortunately, time was one thing she didn’t have.

Her head yanked up when a wolf howl drifted to her from a distance. It sounded much farther than the first one had been but it still made her heart race. A few leaves rustled overhead; otherwise, silence returned with just the quiet soughing of the breeze through the leaves above. Tension leaked out of her as time passed and the howl didn’t repeat. She hugged her knees a little closer, her worn and comfy sweats and a halter exercise top her pajamas out in the woods.

A muffled snore from behind her confirmed Mark was still asleep. She wasn’t sure as to what or when, but something had happened between Loren and Mark. It wasn’t what she’d call a friendship. Maybe a truce? Mark had quit staring daggers at their guide, and Loren had quit frowning every time Mark touched Angie.

She rubbed her chin on her knee, trying to figure out the male mind. She’d probably have better luck discovering the moon was made out of cheese first, she mused. Mark had barely left her side all evening, watching her, simple touches that said he was there. When he’d finally decided to go to bed, she was almost thankful to be alone, but that hadn’t lasted. He’d pulled her in with him and fallen asleep with her resting on his chest. As though he didn’t want her out of his sight.

A tender smile lifted her lips, but there was no one to see it. Okay, she could admit to herself—it was more than just like. But she refused to allow herself to fall for him. That luxury in her life was gone.

A sigh of regret slipped out before she caught it. She searched the stars. For what, she didn’t know. Maybe an answer? Hope? She’d even be happy to have an explanation before she lost the battle.
